The Next Biggest EV: Mahindra e-KUV 100 NXT

Last year when the launch of e-KUV was announced, Mahindra was not just increasing their EV portfolio but also reaffirming their commitment for a greener and a safer environment. And as promised the e-KUV was unveiled during the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. The e-KUV100 NXT is the first electric UV from Mahindra. Apart from certain changes, the eKUV100 looks largely identical to the regular KUV 100. The intimidating looks and the power of the EV’s internal combustion engine siblings were loved by the public. With the e-KUV, we are witnessing the transformation phase of the Indian automobile industry from ICs to EVs. In this article, we’ll find out what makes the e-KUV100 NXT standout from the rest of the SUVs in the market.

The e-KUV100 gets a refreshed image with the new bumper and bonnets designs. The chrome inserts in the front grill and the stylish contours has enhanced the aesthetics of the vehicle. The power-foldable ORVMs with integrated indicators on the side, a new set of 15- inch, diamond cut alloy wheels, new tail lamps with roof mounted stop lights and NXT EV badge makes it a premium EV and gives it aggressive SUV design.

The EV comes with an optional six seat and there are ample legroom and headroom for all six people. The optional piano black inserts and silver accent add a dash of elegance. The instrument cluster displays the status of the charge and the distance that can be covered before recharging. The high-quality fabric- upholstery enhances the overall interior of the e-KUV100. This is similar to the petrol/diesel KUV100.

The vehicle is equipped with a 7- inch touchscreen infotainment system with GPS. The Bluesense App will let you control certain features such as remote diagnostics feature, cabin pre-cooling, real-time location tracking and even keeps an eye on the driving patterns of the drivers with battery status using your phone. The Intellipark helps you to park effortlessly in even the tightest spot.

The e-KUV100 NXT comes with a 14kWh battery pack. Although it is smaller than the one used in the e-Verito, it provides the same range i.e., 100-140kms. in a single charge. With further development, the e-KUV100 is expected to use a much more powerful electric motor and battery pack for better range and performance. This upgraded motor will provide the driver with more power and torque on the road. The e-KUV has a sharp turning radius and with the aid of its electric power steering, it’s handling becomes very smooth. It takes almost 9 hours to charge completely but if you’re in a hurry, the e-KUV also features a fast charging facility that charges 80% within 90 minutes.

The e-KUV feels like a fortress. The robust SUV comes forged in high strength steel with a tough monocoque construction. The vehicle is equipped with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), dual airbags and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). It has ISOFIX mounts for child seat on the rear seat with child safety locks on the rear door. The various other safety features include engine immobilizer, security alarm, speed sensing automatic door locks etc. makes the EV one of the safest in its category.

The Mahindra e-KUV100 NXT is expected to be placed in the price range of ₹8-₹10 Lakhs. The price tag is reasonable when compared with the rest of the electric vehicles in the international market. With the excellent built quality and comfort, it is worth every penny. Also, with the continuous increase in petrol and diesel prices, an electric car will save lots of cash for you.

The e-KUV100 NXT is certainly a game changer in the electric-SUV segment. If rumors are to be believed, then Mahindra is planning to bring a whole new fleet of EVs into the market. This was visible when the company showcased not just one but 4 EVs during the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Although the complete transformation of Indian automobile to electric is a tough nut to crack, Mahindra’s strong presence in the EV segment will bring in competition from other manufacturers as well. Thus, closing in towards the target slowly and steadily.

The e-KUV is a green, smart and powerful vehicle. Equipped with lots of features and the unique quick charge option will make the e-KUV a tough competition for the other EVs out there in the market. With its aggressive looks, superior comfort, beautiful handling, and an amazing long range driveability make it apt for consumers of all ages and an awesome selection for an electric car.
